As a general guide, If a person’s bodyweight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. Obesity has been more precisely defined by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a BMI (Body Mass Index) of 30 and above.
BMI is a key index for relating body weight to height. It is defined as weight in kilograms (kg) divided by their height in meters (m) squared (kg/m2). If your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 29.9 you are considered overweight.

Singapore 11 Oct 2017 – The world will be feeling the weight of obesity on its shoulders with the global annual medical cost of treating obesity expected to hit US$1.2 trillion (S$1.6 trillion) by 2025, announced the World Obesity Federation. Obesity is responsible for many problems in people’s lives besides the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, liver disease and many types of cancer, it also affects their physical health, life expectancy, social life, work life and the way they are regarded by others.
Excess weight gain in adults usually starts in the 20-40 year old period, with maximum body weight being reached in middle age. Once weight gain has occurred, spontaneous weight loss (without a medical cause) is uncommon until after 65 years of age. Women are likely to gain excess weight more rapidly than men, perhaps for metabolic reasons related to their lower lean body mass.
Most of us already know that overeating is the root cause leading to overweight or obesity. Overeating occurs when you consume, over the long term, more food than you actually need to maintain good health. Junk food is also a major factor leading to overweight and obesity. How junk food can cause obesity? Junk food is high in calories but low in nutritional value. In order to reduce your risk of obesity, it is essential to reduce your intake of these unhealthy processed foods and replace them with fruit, vegetables, legumes, whole grains and nuts. Excess sugar and fat can accumulate in your body causing weight gain.
Say ‘NO’ to junk food!” Possible? It is easier said than done, usually. However if one is determined to shed the pounds off his/her body, it can be done, isn’t it?
Obesity, how to lose weight? Losing weight is not easy feat, but even harder if you do not know what you are missing in your attempts to get lean. If you’re not losing weight, the first place you should be looking is the kitchen. Some people focus all their energy on burning off calories that they don’t take the time to consider what they’re putting in as fuel. Diet is at least 80% of the battle. While the exact foods you should be eating depend heavily on your body type, metabolism, and other factors, a good rule of thumb is to stick to all natural, whole foods and do your workout.
Eat most of your starchy carbohydrates (like potatoes, brown rice, grains) on days when you do strength training or more rigorous exercise. On your rest days or when you’re doing light cardio, try to stick to just protein and veggies and not a lot of those starchy foods. Avoid excess bread, sugar, and anything else that’s processed. Look for foods that have the fewest ingredients on the label.
Conscious about your food intake plus doing your workout is the key to reducing weight and achieve balance in life!
